Ask Our Stylists: The Fashion Questions We Hear All the Time (And Our Answers)

One of the best parts of our job isn’t picking out clothes—it’s helping people see themselves differently.

Every week, our stylists hear questions from shoppers who want to feel more confident, make smarter purchases, or simply break out of a style rut. The truth is, almost everyone has questions about fashion, and there are no “bad” ones.

Welcome to Ask Our Stylists, where we answer some of the questions we hear most often inside Diversity Consignment.

“How do I find my personal style?”

Don’t start by asking what everyone else is wearing. Start by asking what makes you feel like yourself.

Think about:

  • What outfits make you feel the most confident?
  • What colors do you naturally gravitate toward?
  • Are there people whose style consistently inspires you?
  • What pieces do you wear over and over?

Personal style isn’t about fitting into one aesthetic. It’s about discovering patterns in what already makes you feel your best and building from there.

“I have a closet full of clothes, but nothing to wear.”

This is incredibly common.

Usually it isn’t because you don’t own enough clothes—it’s because your wardrobe lacks connection.

Maybe you have:

  • Great basics but no statement pieces.
  • Statement pieces but nothing to pair them with.
  • Clothes from three different phases of your life that don’t work together.

A good wardrobe works as a system, not just a collection of individual items.

Sometimes adding just one versatile jacket, pair of pants, or shoe can unlock ten outfits you never realized you already owned.

“How do I make an outfit look more expensive?”

Price has surprisingly little to do with it.

Instead, focus on:

  • Proper fit.
  • Clean, wrinkle-free garments.
  • Quality fabrics when possible.
  • Intentional color combinations.
  • Accessories that complement instead of compete.

Confidence and fit will almost always make a bigger impression than a designer label.

“Can I mix different aesthetics?”

Absolutely.

Some of the most interesting outfits blend influences.

Think:

  • Scandinavian Minimalism + Vintage
  • Romantic + Streetwear
  • Sporty + Tailored
  • Classic + Creative

Style becomes memorable when it feels personal—not when it perfectly fits one category.

“Should I keep clothes that don’t fit anymore?”

Ask yourself one question:

If you saw this in a store today, would you buy it again?

If the answer is no, it may be time to let it go.

Your wardrobe should support who you are today—not who you were five years ago or hope to be someday.

Making room often creates space for pieces you’ll actually wear.

“How many basics should I own?”

There isn’t a magic number.

Instead, build a foundation of pieces you can wear dozens of different ways:

  • A few well-fitting jeans or trousers
  • Neutral tops
  • Layering pieces
  • Jackets
  • Shoes that work across multiple outfits

Once your foundation is strong, your statement pieces become even more impactful.

“How do I become more confident with fashion?”

Start small.

Wear one thing that’s slightly outside your comfort zone.

Then another.

Confidence doesn’t come from wearing the “right” outfit.

It comes from realizing you can wear something different—and still feel like yourself.

Fashion is supposed to be fun, expressive, and personal. There are very few rules worth following if they keep you from enjoying getting dressed.
