COLOR THEORY VOL. 1

Why Some Outfits Just Feel “Right”

Have you ever seen someone walk into a room wearing the simplest outfit imaginable, yet they immediately look polished?

It usually isn’t because they’re wearing expensive clothes.

It’s because they’ve mastered color.

The colors we wear communicate before we ever say a word. They can make us appear more confident, more approachable, more creative, or more refined. Understanding a few simple principles of color theory can completely change the way you build your wardrobe.

Color Rule #1: Start With a Neutral Foundation

The easiest way to create a timeless outfit is to build from neutrals.

Think of these as the foundation of your wardrobe:

• Black
• White
• Cream
• Navy
• Gray
• Brown
• Olive
• Camel

These colors work together effortlessly and allow your statement pieces to shine without overwhelming your look.

Try this: Pair cream trousers, a navy button-up, brown loafers, and a tan leather belt. Nothing is flashy, but the outfit feels intentional because the colors work in harmony.

Color Rule #2: Let One Color Take the Spotlight

One of the biggest styling mistakes is asking every piece to be the star.

Instead, choose one dominant color and let everything else support it.

For example:

• Burgundy sweater
• Charcoal trousers
• Black boots
• Silver jewelry

Your eye naturally lands on the burgundy, creating a clean and balanced look.

Color Rule #3: Mix Texture Before You Mix More Colors

A monochromatic outfit doesn’t have to feel boring.

Instead of adding more colors, introduce different textures:

• Linen
• Denim
• Wool
• Leather
• Suede
• Silk
• Cotton

An all-black outfit becomes far more interesting when it combines a leather jacket, cotton tee, wool trousers, and suede boots.

Texture creates depth without adding visual clutter.

Color Rule #4: Earth Tones Are Surprisingly Versatile

Earth tones continue to dominate modern wardrobes because they pair beautifully with one another.

Try combining:

• Olive + Cream
• Rust + Navy
• Chocolate Brown + Light Blue
• Camel + White
• Forest Green + Beige

These combinations feel grounded, sophisticated, and seasonless.

Color Rule #5: Don’t Match—Coordinate

Matching every item perfectly can make an outfit feel stiff.

Instead, coordinate colors that naturally complement one another.

For example:

Instead of matching black shoes with a black bag every time, try pairing dark brown leather shoes with an olive jacket and cream pants. The subtle variation creates a richer, more effortless look.

Color Spotlight: Burgundy

This week’s featured color is Burgundy.

Why we love it:

• Adds richness without being loud
• Works year-round
• Pairs beautifully with navy, gray, cream, camel, olive, black, and denim
• Feels elevated in natural fabrics like wool, suede, silk, and leather

Whether it’s a knit sweater, leather handbag, loafers, or a vintage blazer, burgundy is one of the easiest statement colors to incorporate into your wardrobe.

Fresh Finds at Diversity

This week we’re especially excited about pieces in:

• Rich burgundy
• Cream linen
• Olive outerwear
• Chocolate brown leather
• Soft gray tailoring

Stop in and let one of our stylists help you build a color palette that works with your personal style—not just the latest trend.

Style Tip of the Week

When in doubt, simplify.

Great style isn’t about wearing more colors. It’s about choosing the right ones and letting each piece have room to breathe.
